Marine Museum ArchivesTimeline:
  • 1646 - European settlement begins.
  • 1692 - A mill is set up along with small homesteads at the head of Quantico Creek
  • 1700 - a warehouse for tobacco is built to serve Prince William & Stafford County.
  • 1700-1760s - Dumfries becomes a major port for tobacco
  • 1770s-1800 -The major economic hub of Dumfries collapses and Alexandria becomes the new center of activity.
  • 1860s - Confederates occupy the area
  • 1862 - Confederates abandon their posts and Union forces take command of the area.
  • 1872 -The Potomac Railroad was extended from Brooke Station to Washington, DC, completing the overland railroad line.
  • 1885 - Cabin Branch Pyrite Mine opens near Dumfries
  • 1917 - The commandant of the Marine Corps establishes Marine Barracks Quantico on May 14th 1917
  • 1920 - The Marine Corps Schools were founded
  • 1935 - The Fleet Marine Force is established
  • 1933 - The New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps creates the Chopawamsic Recreational Demonstration Area.
  • 1941 - The Fleet Marine Force is relocated
  • 1947 - Quantico Marine formed a special squadron known as HMX-1
  • 1968 - The Marine Corps Base Quantico is designated as the Marine Corps Development and Education Command
  • 1989 - The Marine Corps University is established
  • 1995 - The MCBQ welcomes the addition of the Marine Corps War fighting Laboratory
  • 1998 - Reserve Affairs and Marine Corps Recruiting Command moves from Arlington to Quantico
  • 2003 - A land transfer between the Department of the Navy and the Department of the Interior takes place for the area south of the Chopawamsic Creek and the National Park Service retains approximately 1,500 acres which now forms the Prince William Forest National Park
  • 2005 - MCBQ is selected to receive additional personnel as part of BRAC
  • 2006 - The National Marine Corps Museum opens
